LUCE CHAPEL
The site I had chosen is our school’s Luce chapel and its surroundings. The changes that I observed in this site is the changes of the church itself in its relation with people, its contact with the people and the function of the building itself for what surround it. The observing of this site takes a longer period to complete. And the changes happened in the church itself is unlike those cases where we are unable to precisely observe such as the changes of flowers and the floras in our school.
According to the reference book given that I read ( The concept of time) Time which we encounter in everydayness have 2 kinds, which are the time of nature and world-time. My observing result in its relationship with architect and space is of course the time metioned here is that of nature time. And the church and its surrounding is considered as a space. Space is nothing in itself, there is no absolute space. It exists merely by way of the bodies and energies contained in it. Time too is nothing. It persists merely as a consequence of the events taking place in it. There is no absolute time, and no absolute simultaneity either. time is that within which events take place. Since time itself is not a movement, it must somehow have to do with movement. Time is initially encountered in those entities which are changeable, change is in time. And the changing process in the sites that I observed has two states and these two states keep on rotating each period.

The first state is when The church itself infrequently do contact with people, it is during the period of Monday until Friday night. During this period the activity on the site, in the church and its surrounding is hardly seen, and automatically the function of this building during these days is barely ignored. And the state keep remain still until Saturday morning when the activity of the church and people eventually have changed drastically. Most people during this time are in they break time, the time when they relax, and the time when Christians have to visit the church. The activity happened around this site is increased significantly compared to weekdays’. Its contact with people also increased, and the function of the building become very significant. Therefore, the changes happened in the site is more like a whole process, from the beginning of the week, is considered as a start point of the process. It is like a new fresh phase that just being born as a one real condition. And I called it an emergence of the new phase, emergence of the changing phase. The phase itself continuing to remains stable during the weekdays, and when it comes to weekend the phase starts to change into the second phase where a completely different phase or condition has just born. And the phase lasts for two days, and after it the whole changes come back to its original phase. And it goes on the same way they cycle.
Even though the time here does not have a precise definition of ‘when’, ‘when is now’, ‘when is the present that the changes take place’. There is a theory of the concept of time in the book I read, said: What do we learn from the clock about time? Time is something in which a now-point may be arbitrarily fixed, such that, with respect to two different time-points, one is earlier and the other later. And yet no now-point of time is privileged over any other. The clock is just to determine the specific fixing of the now. Time is already interpreted as present, past is interpreted as no-longer present, future as future is indeterminate not-yet-present, past is irretrievable, future is indeterminate. So this is to definite more the boundary of the ‘now’ and ‘present’ that we are keep confusing about. And in every process of changing they got to be a ‘past’, ‘now’, and ‘future’ which these three phases keep on cycling into each other.
The reason why I chose this site is because as a Christian and had visited this church for few times, I found it quite interesting compared with other sites in tunghai university. And it made me want to do an observing for this site. Because its unique ratio that shown a great changes during some period of times. And the changes happened on this site is practically there and we can see it, feel its changing when we live in tunghai. And the most important thing is the changes itself has some connection and affect in Tunghai university’s life. Especially for Christians who go to that church every week. Just like the movie of a man smoking in a room, and recorded from a few different angle in the house, has the same reason with the event cycling in this site. If by the time we watched the movie, and feel that we are so into the movie, and the movie seems so real as if we can feel it progressing simultaneously with our time, it is definitely the true meaning of time. And here I tried to find the same case of changing and a portrait of an event that actually also happened in the same time with our daily life we live, it just that we are often ignore the changes emerge in that site.Actually if we want to be more detailed about the changes happened in the site, the process also can be divided into two additional phases. Is when daylight and the night time impact of the changes. During the daylight, the activity of people and students crossing the site is abundant, and sometimes during the daylight Luce chapel also visited by the tourists who want to take photos of the symbol of tunghai university, but during the night time the activity around the site is nothing. The changes of the Luce chapel and its surrounding that I observed is quite rich and interesting. Especially the changes between weekdays and weekends, that has emerged quite a number of phases.
